The Kahlert School of Computing at the University of Utah is offering several application fee waivers for international PhD students based on merit. These waivers are not available for master’s applicants. The deadline for requesting a fee waiver is November 1, 2024, at 5 PM Mountain Time. It’s crucial to complete the necessary paperwork for foreign waivers by this deadline. Decisions on the fee waiver requests are expected to be made by early December.

You may begin your online application and prepare reference letters before receiving a decision on the fee waiver. However, it’s important not to pay the application fee until you hear back about your fee waiver request. Once the application fee is paid, it is non-refundable, and a granted waiver will not apply.

About the University of Utah

The University of Utah, established in 1850, is a publicly funded institution with an undergraduate enrollment of 26,355 students as of fall 2022. Located in an urban setting, the campus spans 1,534 acres and operates on a semester-based academic calendar. In the 2024 edition of Best Colleges, the University of Utah is ranked #115 among National Universities. The tuition and fees for in-state students are $10,287, while out-of-state students pay $33,045.

Often referred to as “The U,” the University of Utah is well-known for its academic rigor, strong athletic programs, and pioneering research. Undergraduate students can choose from a variety of housing options, including traditional residence halls, two- and four-bedroom apartments, and themed living communities. The Utes, Utah’s athletic teams, compete in the NCAA Division I PAC-12 Conference and have a spirited rivalry with teams from Brigham Young University. The university hosts several research centers, such as the Brain Institute, the American West Center, and the Center for High-Performance Computing.

The University of Utah also offers prestigious graduate programs through its S.J. Quinney College of Law, College of Engineering, College of Education, and David Eccles School of Business. The School of Medicine, known for its excellent primary care department, is the only medical school in Utah.

Why Choose the University of Utah?

Size and Variety: The University of Utah is the second-largest university in the state, offering a wide range of academic programs, including more than 138 majors. The campus is home to over 50 research centers and more than 600 student clubs and organizations, catering to diverse interests, from intellectual pursuits to recreational activities.

While Utah may have a reputation for lacking diversity, the university showcases higher levels of ethnic, gender, and geographic diversity than most other institutions nationwide. The University of Utah is ranked as the most diverse large university in the state, with a balanced gender ratio. Additionally, Salt Lake City is frequently recognized as one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the country, making it a welcoming environment for all students.

Greek Life: The University of Utah offers an extensive Greek life with eleven fraternities and eight sororities, making it the top choice for students interested in joining Greek organizations in Utah. Despite the mixed opinions on Greek life, it provides an excellent opportunity for students to make lasting friendships, participate in events and parties, contribute to community service, and engage in leadership activities.

Exceptional Gym Facilities: The University of Utah has recently built a state-of-the-art gymnasium called the University of Utah Student Life Center, thanks to its recent membership in the Pac-12 and the subsequent increase in funds. Unlike many institutions where athletic facilities are reserved for sports teams, Utah’s gym is accessible to all students at no extra cost. The gym offers a wide array of amenities, including a 50-meter indoor pool, outdoor leisure pools, a large indoor hot tub and spa, a 320-yard indoor running track, a four-story climbing wall, a 15,000-square-foot fitness center, an outdoor mezzanine, an outdoor fire pit, five sports courts, racquetball courts, group fitness studios, and a combative room.
