How to get started with Setting Up TikTok Ads: Full Beginners Guide

Wiki Guide

Before you start creating your ad, make sure you have a clear understanding of your advertising goals and the specific ad groups you want to target. This will help you choose the right settings and create an ad that is effective for your audience.

TikTok Ads Manager organizes ads into three main parts: campaigns, ad groups, and individual ads. After you’ve created your overall campaign and defined the ad groups you want to target, you can start creating individual ads. To do this, simply upload your videos or images, or use TikTok Ads Manager’s tools to design eye-catching ads in no time.

TikTok Ads Manager allows you to create two types of ads: images and videos. The specific format and requirements for your ads will depend on where you want them to appear.

Keep in mind that you can have a maximum of 20 ads per ad group.

The following sections will explain each part of the ad creation module, as shown in the animation below.

Step 1: Give your ad a name. This name will help you identify your ad when you’re looking for it later. It’s just for your reference and won’t be seen by anyone else.

Step 2: Choose the format for your ad. TikTok only supports video ads at this time. If you’re using our Global App Bundle, you can use both images and videos.

Step 3: Select Your Media

You can choose from three ways to add media to your ad:

Upload from Computer: Add media directly from your computer’s files.

Use Saved Media: Access media you’ve used in previous ads from this section. These files will be automatically saved in your assets library.

Create a Video: Use our video creation tools to make a stunning video. You can either use a pre-designed template or the “Smart Video” feature.

Video Template: Create video ads using existing images and our professionally designed templates. For more details on using templates, refer to the Video Creation Kit.

Smart Video: Use our “Smart Video” feature, which automatically analyzes your media to create professional-looking edited videos.

Smart Video Soundtrack: Add background music to videos that don’t have sound using our smart technology.

Grab Attention with a Thumbnail

Choose a captivating cover photo to instantly draw your audience’s attention. You can either upload your own custom cover photo or select one from the pre-selected images from your video. Depending on the length of your video, you can choose from up to 8 displayed keyframes.

After adding media to your ad, you’ll enter the following elements that will be displayed alongside your ad:

Display Name: Represent your brand with this name. It should match the brand/product/company name of the website or app you’re promoting.

Text: This text will be part of your ad’s creative and will inform your audience about what you’re promoting.

Call to Action: Tell your audience what you want them to do when they see your ad. See the table below for a list of available CTAs.

Profile Image: Showcase your brand with this image. It will appear on your ad’s creative.

URL: Enter the URL of the website you want your ad to drive traffic to. This URL will only be available for specific objectives.

It’s recommended that you preview all ads on your own device to see how they will appear to your target audience. For more detailed instructions on how to preview ads, please refer to the How to Preview Ads guide.

If you’ve chosen “Website conversions” as your advertising goal, you’ll need to set up a Pixel at the Ad Group level.

To track your ad performance data, you can add relevant Pixel or third-party tracking URLs.

To learn more about the TikTok Pixel, please visit the About TikTok Pixel page.

For a list of supported third-party tracking partners, refer to the Supported Third-Party Measurement page.

Once you’ve created your ads, click the “Submit” button to finalize your creation. To create another ad, simply click the “Add” button.
